The history of this shape is associated with that of Anelletti or Anelli, inspired by the large hoop earrings worn by African women which captured the imagination of the public during the African campaigns.
In fact, the New Dictionary of Synonyms of the Italian Language published in Florence in 1838 describes campanelline as soup pastas that are “round like the hoops that women wear on their ears”. This description will later be taken from the Vocabolario domestico italiano ad uso de' giovani (Italian Domestic Dictionary for use by young people) (Naples, 1851) which speaks of a "kind of small pasta in the form of rings (Anellette)".
This shape is especially good in recipes with vegetable, fish or meat broth.
